What is Roll-DPoS?

Roll-DPoS is the consensus mechanism developed for the IoTeX blockchain, combining Delegated Proof of Stake (DPoS) with a randomized committee rotation scheme. Token holders vote for delegate candidates, and from the elected delegate pool, a smaller active committee is randomly selected for each epoch to perform block production and validation. This random selection uses a verifiable random function (VRF) to ensure unpredictability while remaining verifiable. Within each epoch, the selected committee members take turns producing blocks in a round-robin fashion. The randomized rotation is the key differentiator from standard DPoS — instead of all elected delegates participating in every round, only a randomly chosen subset is active at any given time.

Roll-DPoS provides fast block times (approximately 5 seconds) with near-instant finality within each epoch. The random committee selection enhances security compared to standard DPoS by making it difficult for an adversary to predict which delegates will be active in the next epoch, preventing targeted attacks. The smaller active committee (compared to the full delegate pool) reduces communication overhead and enables faster consensus. The protocol maintains liveness even if some selected committee members are offline, as the remaining members can still produce blocks. The DPoS foundation ensures that all validators have economic stake in the network through the delegation mechanism, aligning incentives between token holders and validators.

Roll-DPoS has been running on the IoTeX mainnet since its launch in April 2019. IoTeX is a blockchain platform focused on the Internet of Things (IoT) and machine-to-machine interactions, founded by Raullen Chai, a former Uber security engineer. The network uses Roll-DPoS to provide the fast confirmations and predictable performance needed for IoT applications. IoTeX has expanded beyond its original IoT focus to include decentralized identity (DID) and real-world asset applications, including the Pebble Tracker hardware device for verifiable real-world data. The Roll-DPoS design reflects IoTeX's emphasis on balancing performance with decentralization for practical IoT use cases.
