What is Quark?

Quark is a proof-of-work hashing algorithm that chains together six different cryptographic hash functions: BLAKE, Blue Midnight Wish (BMW), Grøstl, JH, Skein, and Keccak. These six functions were all finalists or notable entries in the NIST SHA-3 competition, meaning each one was independently vetted for cryptographic strength before being combined in Quark. The algorithm processes input data sequentially through these functions, with each hash output feeding into the next, and includes conditional branching that adds an additional layer of complexity to the computation path.

The multi-hash design of Quark provides robust security through redundancy — compromising the overall algorithm would require breaking multiple independently designed hash functions simultaneously. The algorithm was specifically designed to be efficient on standard CPUs, with a focus on enabling mining with consumer-grade hardware rather than specialized equipment. Its relatively light memory requirements and moderate computational demands made it accessible to a broad range of miners. However, as with many algorithms initially considered ASIC-resistant, the evolving capabilities of hardware manufacturers have gradually reduced this advantage over time.

The Quark algorithm was introduced with the launch of Quarkcoin (QRK) in July 2013, which was one of the earlier altcoins to experiment with multi-algorithm hashing as an alternative to Bitcoin's single-function SHA-256. Quarkcoin featured a rapid initial distribution with a high block reward that decreased quickly, designed to achieve broad distribution in a short period. The algorithm was also adopted by other cryptocurrencies including PIVX (initially) and several smaller projects. While Quarkcoin itself has faded in prominence, the concept of chaining multiple NIST competition algorithms influenced later designs like X11 and its derivatives.
