Headquartered in Minato City, Japan, the project released 500 million tokens at launch, representing 5% of a stated 10 billion maximum supply. The project drew on Japan’s aging demographic as a primary use case for medical finance on the blockchain, operating under the website smartmcoin.com until October 2024.

The SmartMCoin architecture described low-latency settlement and horizontal scalability via service chains, targeting hospitals, insurers, and patients as end users. The design included provisions for transaction continuity during disruptions such as cyber-attacks, power outages, or natural disasters, a stated priority given Japan’s earthquake risk. The project also outlined an offline transfer mechanism intended to mirror the resilience of physical currency in emergency conditions.

SMC’s stated roadmap included cross-border medical billing, micropayments for telemedicine, and gamified wellness incentives denominated in SMC tokens. The project did not sustain operations: the smartmcoin.com website went offline in October 2024, and no successor project has been announced.
