What is AptosBFT?

AptosBFT is the Byzantine Fault Tolerant consensus protocol used by the Aptos blockchain, evolving from a lineage of BFT protocols including HotStuff and DiemBFT (originally developed for Meta's Diem project). The protocol uses a leader-based approach where in each round a designated leader proposes a block, and validators vote on it. AptosBFT introduces a pipelined architecture where block proposal, voting, and finalization happen concurrently across different rounds — while validators are voting on one block, the next leader is already proposing the subsequent block. The protocol also features a reputation-based leader selection mechanism that prioritizes validators with strong recent performance, reducing the impact of slow or unresponsive leaders on overall throughput.

AptosBFT achieves sub-second finality, typically finalizing blocks in under one second with low latency. The protocol provides deterministic finality with BFT safety guarantees, tolerating up to one-third of validators being Byzantine. The pipelining design significantly improves throughput compared to non-pipelined BFT protocols by overlapping the phases of consensus for different blocks. The reputation-based leader rotation ensures that validators who have been recently responsive are more likely to be selected as leaders, improving the protocol's practical performance under real-world conditions where some validators may have higher latency or periodic downtime. AptosBFT also implements an optimistic fast path where blocks can be committed with reduced latency when all validators are responsive.

AptosBFT powers the Aptos blockchain, which launched its mainnet in October 2022. Aptos was developed by Aptos Labs, founded by Mo Shaikh and Avery Ching, both former Meta engineers who worked on the Diem blockchain project. The blockchain uses the Move programming language (also originally developed for Diem) and features parallel transaction execution through its Block-STM engine. The consensus protocol represents the culmination of several years of BFT protocol research that began with Facebook's Libra/Diem project, with each iteration (HotStuff, DiemBFT v1-v4, AptosBFT) improving on the previous version's performance and fault tolerance characteristics.
