What is DPoS-BFT?

DPoS-BFT is a hybrid consensus approach that combines Delegated Proof of Stake for validator election with Byzantine Fault Tolerance for block finalization. In this model, token holders vote for a set of delegates (block producers), and the elected delegates participate in a BFT-style consensus process to produce and finalize blocks. The BFT component typically involves the elected delegates taking turns as block proposers while the other delegates validate and vote on each proposed block. A block is considered finalized when a supermajority (typically two-thirds) of the delegates confirms it. This hybrid model provides the democratic validator selection of DPoS with the deterministic finality guarantees of BFT consensus.

DPoS-BFT achieves fast block production (typically 0.5-3 seconds per block) and deterministic finality, meaning confirmed blocks cannot be reversed. The elected delegate set is typically small (21-27 active producers is common), which enables efficient BFT communication but introduces centralization trade-offs. The protocol's security relies on the assumption that token holders will vote for trustworthy delegates, and that at least two-thirds of elected delegates are honest. Slashing mechanisms and vote decay encourage delegates to remain honest and responsive. The DPoS election process runs continuously, with token holders able to change their votes at any time, providing ongoing accountability for delegates.

DPoS-BFT is the consensus approach used by TRON (with 27 Super Representatives) and EOS (with 21 Block Producers), two of the most prominent blockchains using this model. TRON, founded by Justin Sun, launched in 2018 and has become one of the most-used blockchains for USDT stablecoin transfers. EOS, developed by Block.one and launched in 2018, pioneered the DPoS-BFT approach at scale with its EOSIO software. The model has been adopted by numerous other blockchains including WAX and various EOSIO-based networks. While DPoS-BFT has been criticized for producing relatively centralized networks (with voting often dominated by large token holders), its practical performance has made it popular for high-throughput applications.
