What is HyperBFT?

HyperBFT is the consensus protocol used by the Hyperliquid blockchain, a high-performance Layer 1 designed specifically for decentralized trading. HyperBFT is derived from the HotStuff family of BFT consensus protocols, optimized for the extreme low-latency requirements of a decentralized exchange. The protocol uses a leader-based approach where a designated leader proposes blocks containing ordered transactions, and validators vote to finalize them. The optimization focuses on minimizing the end-to-end latency from transaction submission to finality, which is critical for trading applications where execution speed directly impacts user experience and market efficiency. The protocol achieves this through pipelined consensus phases and efficient network communication patterns.

HyperBFT achieves sub-second block finality, with end-to-end latency (from order submission to confirmed execution) typically under one second. The protocol provides deterministic BFT finality guarantees, tolerating up to one-third of validators being Byzantine. The design prioritizes the specific needs of an order book exchange: deterministic transaction ordering (preventing front-running), high throughput for order placement and cancellation, and fast settlement. Unlike general-purpose blockchains that optimize for diverse workloads, HyperBFT is tuned for the high-frequency, low-latency requirements of financial trading, with the consensus mechanism designed to support the throughput needed for a full on-chain order book.

HyperBFT powers the Hyperliquid blockchain, which has grown to become one of the largest decentralized perpetual exchanges by trading volume. Hyperliquid launched its mainnet with a focus on providing a trading experience comparable to centralized exchanges while maintaining the security and transparency of on-chain execution. The platform supports perpetual futures and spot trading with an on-chain order book and matching engine, all dependent on HyperBFT's low-latency consensus for performance. The Hyperliquid team has emphasized performance engineering, with the entire stack optimized for trading use cases. The HyperBFT protocol represents the trend of application-specific blockchain designs where the consensus mechanism is tailored to the primary use case.
