What is KAWPOW?

KAWPOW is a proof-of-work hashing algorithm derived from ProgPoW (Programmatic Proof of Work), which itself evolved from Ethereum's Ethash. The algorithm was specifically designed to maximize the utilization of GPU hardware capabilities, including compute units, memory hierarchy, and specialized operations. KAWPOW works by generating a DAG (Directed Acyclic Graph) similar to Ethash, but adds a programmable sequence of random math operations and memory accesses that change every block. This means the algorithm essentially creates a new, unique mining program for each block, requiring the full range of GPU capabilities rather than just memory bandwidth.

The core innovation of KAWPOW lies in its approach to ASIC resistance. Rather than simply making the algorithm memory-hard (as Ethash does), KAWPOW ensures that the full computational pipeline of a modern GPU — including integer math, floating-point operations, bitwise manipulation, and memory access patterns — is exercised during mining. This makes it extremely difficult and economically unfavorable to build an ASIC that outperforms a GPU, because the ASIC would essentially need to replicate the entire GPU architecture to handle the constantly changing program. The algorithm also benefits from the growing DAG size, which increases over time and ensures that older hardware with less memory gradually becomes obsolete, preventing the accumulation of mining power on outdated equipment.

KAWPOW was adopted by Ravencoin (RVN) in May 2020, replacing the previous KawPoW-predecessor algorithm X16Rv2 through a network hard fork. Ravencoin, launched in January 2018, is focused on enabling the creation and transfer of digital assets on its blockchain and has maintained a strong commitment to GPU-accessible mining as a core principle. The transition to KAWPOW reinforced this commitment by providing stronger ASIC resistance than the previous X16R family of algorithms. KAWPOW has also been adopted by Neoxa and several other smaller cryptocurrency projects that share the philosophy of maintaining decentralized, GPU-based mining. The algorithm remains one of the most popular choices for GPU miners as of the mid-2020s.
