What is kHeavyHash?

kHeavyHash is a cryptographic algorithm used by blockchain networks for hashing and mining operations. Blockspot.io tracks 4 cryptocurrencies using kHeavyHash, of which 3 are currently active.

kHeavyHash is a matrix-multiplication enhanced hashing algorithm that combines the cryptographic strength of Keccak (SHA-3) with computationally intensive linear algebra operations. The algorithm works by first hashing the input data with Keccak to produce an intermediate hash, then converting portions of this hash into a vector that is multiplied by a large, randomly generated matrix. The result of this matrix multiplication is then hashed again through Keccak to produce the final output. This two-layer approach creates a proof-of-work scheme that is both cryptographically secure and computationally demanding in a specific, targeted way.

The key innovation of kHeavyHash lies in its matrix multiplication step, which introduces a heavy computational workload that favors hardware capable of performing parallel matrix operations efficiently. This design creates interesting properties for mining: while the algorithm is not strictly ASIC-resistant, it is designed so that the hardware optimized for mining it — particularly hardware with matrix multiplication capabilities — could potentially be repurposed for useful computations such as AI and machine learning workloads. The matrix used in the computation is periodically regenerated, adding an additional layer of variability. The Keccak components ensure strong cryptographic security, while the matrix operations add a unique computational signature that differentiates it from purely hash-based proof-of-work systems.

kHeavyHash was developed specifically for the Kaspa (KAS) blockchain, one of the fastest blockDAG-based cryptocurrencies using the GHOSTDAG protocol. Kaspa adopted kHeavyHash to replace its original hash algorithm, with the transition designed to encourage the development of specialized mining hardware that could serve dual purposes in both cryptocurrency mining and computational tasks. The algorithm gained significant attention during 2023-2024 as Kaspa rose in market capitalization. The concept of optical mining — using photonic processors for the matrix multiplication component — was explored as a potential future direction, though practical implementations remained in early stages. kHeavyHash represents a philosophical shift in proof-of-work design, moving away from pure ASIC resistance toward making the mining hardware itself more broadly useful.
