LBRY is a custom chained hashing algorithm specifically designed for the LBRY Credits (LBC) cryptocurrency network. The algorithm works by sequentially applying three different hash functions to the input data: first SHA-256, then SHA-512, and finally RIPEMD-160, with additional processing steps between each stage. This chaining approach combines the cryptographic strengths of three well-established and independently designed hash functions, creating a composite algorithm where breaking the overall scheme would require compromising multiple distinct cryptographic primitives. The final output is a hash that serves as the basis for LBRY's Proof of Work mining.

The multi-algorithm chaining design of LBRY provides defense-in-depth security, as a vulnerability discovered in any single hash function would not necessarily compromise the entire scheme. By combining SHA-256, SHA-512, and RIPEMD-160, the algorithm inherits the collective security research and battle-testing that each of these functions has undergone individually over many years. The algorithm is designed to be GPU-mineable, though its unique combination of hash functions means that existing Bitcoin ASICs cannot be directly repurposed for LBRY mining. The sequential nature of the chain prevents certain parallelization optimizations, maintaining a more level playing field between different mining hardware.

LBRY Credits (LBC) was the native cryptocurrency of the LBRY network, a decentralized content sharing and publishing platform that aimed to create a free and open marketplace for digital content. The LBRY blockchain launched in 2016 with its custom hash algorithm, and the project gained significant attention as an alternative to centralized content platforms like YouTube. Miners used GPUs to mine LBC, which was used for publishing content, tipping creators, and purchasing digital content on the platform. The LBRY project faced significant legal challenges from the SEC regarding the classification of LBC as a security, which impacted the project's development and the broader discussion around cryptocurrency regulation in the United States.
