What is Nightshade?

Nightshade is a cryptographic algorithm used by blockchain networks for hashing and mining operations. Blockspot.io tracks 2 cryptocurrencies using Nightshade, of which 2 are currently active.

Nightshade is the sharding design used by the NEAR Protocol, which models the system as a single blockchain where each block logically contains all transactions from all shards, but the actual processing and storage is distributed across validators assigned to individual shards. Each shard produces a chunk — a portion of each block containing the transactions for that shard. Validators are assigned to shards based on their stake, and each chunk producer processes transactions, produces state transitions, and generates a chunk that is included in the next block. A subset of validators called chunk validators verify the correctness of chunks through a protocol that uses erasure coding and fraud proofs to ensure data availability without requiring every validator to process every shard.

Nightshade achieves scalability by distributing the transaction processing load across shards while maintaining the simplicity of a single-chain model for users and developers. Block times are approximately 1-1.3 seconds, and the system is designed to scale throughput by adding more shards as demand increases. Security is maintained through random validator assignment (preventing adversaries from concentrating stake in one shard), chunk validation protocols, and fisherman roles that can challenge invalid chunks. The single-chain abstraction simplifies cross-shard communication compared to multi-chain sharding designs — cross-shard transactions are handled through asynchronous receipts that are processed in subsequent blocks, making them transparent to the end user.

Nightshade has been running on the NEAR Protocol mainnet since its launch in October 2020, with the sharding implementation evolving through multiple phases. NEAR was co-founded by Alexander Skidanov and Illia Polosukhin (the latter co-authored the foundational "Attention Is All You Need" transformer paper). The initial mainnet launched with a single shard, and subsequent upgrades have progressively implemented the full Nightshade vision, including chunk-only producers and stateless validation. NEAR has positioned itself as a developer-friendly platform with a focus on usability, featuring human-readable account names and a JavaScript SDK, while Nightshade provides the underlying scalability.
