Parlia is the consensus engine used by BNB Smart Chain (BSC), implementing a Proof of Staked Authority (PoSA) model that combines elements of delegated proof-of-stake with proof-of-authority. A fixed set of validators — currently 45 active validators — takes turns producing blocks in a round-robin fashion, with each validator assigned specific slots. Validators are elected every 24 hours based on the amount of BNB staked and delegated to them. Block production occurs every 3 seconds, and validators sign blocks using their authority keys. The system uses an epoch-based rotation where the validator set is updated at each epoch boundary based on staking rankings from the BNB Beacon Chain (formerly Binance Chain).

Parlia achieves fast block times and high throughput by limiting the validator set to a small, pre-selected group, which reduces communication overhead compared to permissionless consensus protocols. The protocol reaches finality after a majority of validators have produced subsequent blocks, typically within a few seconds. Security is maintained through staking requirements and the threat of slashing — validators that double-sign or go offline for extended periods can lose a portion of their staked BNB. However, the relatively small validator set means Parlia trades some degree of decentralization for performance, making it more suitable for applications that prioritize speed and low transaction costs over maximum censorship resistance.

Parlia powers BNB Smart Chain, one of the most widely used EVM-compatible blockchains by transaction volume and total value locked. BSC was launched by Binance in September 2020 and quickly became popular due to its low fees and compatibility with Ethereum tooling. The consensus mechanism was designed specifically for BSC's needs, balancing the demands of a high-throughput DeFi ecosystem with reasonable decentralization. The validator set has expanded over time from an initial 21 to 45 validators, and the protocol continues to evolve as part of BSC's roadmap toward greater decentralization.
