What is Verthash?

Verthash is a cryptographic algorithm used by blockchain networks for hashing and mining operations. Blockspot.io tracks 1 cryptocurrencies using Verthash, of which 1 are currently active.

Verthash is a memory-hard Proof of Work algorithm specifically designed for the Vertcoin cryptocurrency, developed to maximize GPU mining accessibility while resisting ASIC and FPGA miners. The algorithm operates by first generating a large verification data file (approximately 1.2 GB) called the Verthash data file, which is derived deterministically from the blockchain's genesis block hash. During mining, the algorithm performs multiple rounds of memory lookups into this data file using indices derived from SHA-3 hashing of the block header, combining the results to produce the final proof. This approach means miners must have the full data file stored in fast-access memory to mine efficiently.

Verthash's design philosophy centers on achieving the strongest possible ASIC resistance while keeping mining practical on consumer-grade GPUs. The 1.2 GB data file requirement exceeds the on-chip memory capacity of economically viable ASICs and FPGAs, forcing any specialized hardware to include expensive external memory that negates its speed advantage. The algorithm is I/O-bound rather than compute-bound, meaning that memory bandwidth is the primary bottleneck, which plays to the strengths of modern GPUs. Verification of Verthash proofs is fast, requiring only a small number of lookups into the data file, making it lightweight for full nodes. The algorithm also benefits from a simple implementation that reduces the risk of subtle bugs or optimization shortcuts.

Verthash was activated on Vertcoin's mainnet in February 2021 through a hard fork, replacing the previous Lyra2REv3 algorithm. Vertcoin is one of the oldest cryptocurrency projects committed to ASIC-resistant mining, having changed its mining algorithm multiple times throughout its history whenever ASIC miners threatened to centralize the network. Founded in 2014, Vertcoin has consistently prioritized decentralized mining and was among the first coins to adopt the one-click miner concept, making GPU mining accessible to non-technical users. The transition to Verthash represented a mature approach to the ASIC resistance problem, using a large fixed dataset similar in concept to Ethereum's DAG but optimized specifically for long-term GPU mining sustainability.
