WETH, short for “wrapped ETH,” is a token that allows for seamless trading between ETH and other ERC-20 tokens on decentralized platforms like Radar Relay. It is important to note that WETH is not an actual physical wrapping of ETH but rather a token obtained through a smart contract when ETH is traded. By converting ETH to WETH, users can trade directly with other ERC-20 tokens without concerns about compatibility and potential token loss.

ETH, the native currency of the Ethereum blockchain, was established before the development of the ERC-20 standard. ETH does not fully conform to the standards for seamless token trading among ERC-20 tokens. WETH solves this issue by providing a standardized format for ETH, enabling users to trade with any ERC-20 token on decentralized platforms.

While WETH currently serves a vital role in the Ethereum ecosystem, efforts are underway to update the ETH codebase to comply with the ERC-20 standards. In the future, newer standards like ERC223 may replace ERC-20 as improvements and solutions are developed. Ultimately, the goal is to have ETH fully compatible with its standards, eliminating the need for intermediary tokens like WETH.
