What is an Exchange Traded Product?

An Exchange Traded Product (ETP) is a broad category of financial securities that derive their value from an underlying asset or benchmark and are traded on stock exchanges during regular market hours, just like conventional stocks. The term ETP encompasses several product types, including Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs), Exchange Traded Notes (ETNs), and Exchange Traded Commodities (ETCs), each with distinct structural characteristics but all sharing the common feature of exchange-based trading.

ETPs have become an important gateway for traditional investors seeking exposure to asset classes that might otherwise be difficult to access directly. In the cryptocurrency space, this is particularly relevant — crypto ETPs allow investors to gain exposure to the price movements of digital assets like Bitcoin, Ethereum, and other cryptocurrencies through their familiar brokerage accounts, without needing to register on a cryptocurrency exchange, set up digital wallets, or manage private keys.

The prices of ETPs fluctuate throughout the trading day based on supply and demand, similar to stocks. This intraday price movement gives investors flexibility to enter and exit positions at specific price levels rather than waiting for end-of-day pricing. Market makers typically ensure adequate liquidity, keeping the spread between bid and ask prices reasonably tight for actively traded products.

Crypto ETPs have seen significant growth in recent years as institutional interest in digital assets has increased. They are offered by a growing number of issuers across global markets and are available in various structures — some holding the physical cryptocurrency, others using synthetic replication through derivatives. For investors who prefer the regulatory protections and operational simplicity of traditional securities markets, ETPs provide an accessible and regulated pathway to participate in the digital asset ecosystem without the operational overhead of direct crypto ownership.
