An investment fund is a collective investment vehicle that pools capital from multiple individual investors and deploys it across a portfolio of assets with the shared objective of generating returns. Professionally managed by experienced fund managers, these vehicles have long been a cornerstone of traditional finance, with investments typically spanning stocks, bonds, real estate, and other securities. With the rise of blockchain technology, investment funds have expanded into the cryptocurrency and digital asset space, allocating capital to established cryptocurrencies, emerging tokens, and companies building blockchain-based infrastructure and services.
Investment funds come in two primary structures: open-ended and closed-ended. Open-ended funds can issue an unlimited number of shares and accept new contributions from investors at any time, with shares priced daily based on their net asset value (NAV). Investors can also redeem their shares directly with the fund, providing relatively straightforward liquidity. These funds are more common but are generally not traded on stock exchanges. Closed-ended funds, by contrast, issue a fixed number of shares through a public offering or private placement. Once the initial offering is complete, no new shares are created. Investors who wish to buy or sell must do so on the secondary market if the fund is publicly listed. The investment decisions in a closed-ended fund are made entirely by the fund manager, following the fund's stated investment objective and strategy.
Crypto-focused investment funds give traditional investors access to digital asset markets without requiring them to directly manage wallets, navigate exchanges, or handle the technical aspects of cryptocurrency ownership. Fund managers conduct due diligence, manage risk, and adjust portfolios based on market conditions, providing professional oversight that many investors find valuable in the complex and rapidly evolving digital asset landscape.
