QuBit is a proof-of-work hashing algorithm that chains together five distinct cryptographic hash functions in a fixed sequential order: Luffa, Cubehash, SHAvite-3, SIMD, and ECHO. Each input is processed through all five algorithms one after another, with the output of each function serving as the input to the next. This multi-algorithm approach was designed to provide greater cryptographic robustness than relying on a single hash function, as an attacker would need to find weaknesses in all five algorithms simultaneously to compromise the scheme.

QuBit offers moderate ASIC resistance due to the complexity of implementing five different hash functions in a single hardware design, though it is less resistant than algorithms with higher memory requirements or randomized execution orders. The algorithm is relatively lightweight in terms of memory usage, which makes it suitable for a variety of hardware platforms including CPUs and GPUs. Its security benefits come from the diversity of cryptographic primitives used — Luffa and Cubehash are based on different design philosophies from SHAvite-3, SIMD, and ECHO, making it unlikely that a single cryptanalytic breakthrough would affect all five components.

QuBit was introduced around 2014 as part of the wave of multi-algorithm proof-of-work designs that followed X11. It is most closely associated with the Digibyte blockchain, which supports QuBit as one of its five mining algorithms in its multi-algo consensus system called MultiShield (alongside SHA-256d, Scrypt, Skein, and Odocrypt). This multi-algorithm approach allows Digibyte to distribute mining across different hardware types, promoting greater decentralization. QuBit has also been used by smaller projects like GeoCoin and Phonecoin, though its adoption has remained relatively niche compared to more widely known algorithms.
