What is Shabal256?

Shabal256 is a cryptographic hash function from the Shabal family, which was submitted as a candidate during the NIST SHA-3 competition in 2008. The algorithm uses a unique construction based on a nonlinear feedback shift register combined with a keyed permutation, processing input data in 512-bit blocks and producing a 256-bit digest. Shabal employs a combination of addition, rotation, and XOR operations on 32-bit words, with an internal state that is iteratively updated through multiple rounds of mixing. This design makes it relatively lightweight compared to many other hash function candidates while still maintaining strong collision resistance.

One of Shabal256's most notable properties is its computational efficiency on general-purpose processors, making it well-suited for applications that require frequent hashing without excessive power consumption. Although it did not advance to the final round of the SHA-3 competition, Shabal received positive reviews for its innovative design and reasonable security margins. The algorithm is particularly effective for Proof of Capacity (PoC) mining, where large datasets of precomputed hashes (plots) are stored on disk and later read during mining, because its relatively fast computation allows miners to generate plot files efficiently while still providing sufficient cryptographic security.

Shabal256 is most prominently known as the core hash function in Burstcoin (now Signum), the pioneering cryptocurrency that introduced Proof of Capacity mining in 2014. In Signum's PoC system, miners fill hard drives with precomputed Shabal256 hashes called nonces, and during each mining round they read portions of these plots to find valid deadlines. This approach dramatically reduces energy consumption compared to traditional Proof of Work mining. The algorithm's adoption in the PoC ecosystem has inspired other storage-based mining projects and demonstrated that environmentally friendly consensus mechanisms are viable alternatives to computation-intensive mining.
