Skein is a cryptographic hash function that was one of five finalists in the NIST SHA-3 competition. It was designed by Bruce Schneier, Niels Ferguson, Stefan Lucks, Doug Whiting, Mihir Bellare, Tadayoshi Kohno, Jon Callas, and Jesse Walker. The algorithm is built on the Threefish tweakable block cipher, which operates on 256-bit, 512-bit, or 1024-bit blocks using only three simple operations: addition, rotation, and XOR (ARX). Skein uses the Unique Block Iteration (UBI) chaining mode, which makes each block encryption unique by incorporating a tweak value that encodes the position and type of each block in the message processing.
Skein offers several notable properties that made it attractive for both cryptographic and cryptocurrency applications. Its ARX-based design makes it extremely fast in software, particularly on 64-bit processors, while being straightforward to implement securely without timing side-channel vulnerabilities. The algorithm supports arbitrary output lengths and includes built-in support for personalization, key derivation, message authentication codes (MACs), and tree hashing for parallel processing. Skein provides strong security margins with no known practical attacks on its full-round variants. While not specifically designed for ASIC resistance, its simplicity and efficiency on general-purpose CPUs made it competitive for mining on standard hardware during the GPU-mining era.
In the cryptocurrency world, Skein gained adoption primarily through two paths. First, it serves as a component within several chained hashing algorithms, including PHI1612, SkunkHash, and various custom mining algorithms. Second, several standalone cryptocurrency projects adopted Skein as their primary proof-of-work function. The algorithm was designed by a team that includes Bruce Schneier, one of the most respected figures in cryptography, which lent it significant credibility. Although Keccak ultimately won the SHA-3 competition, Skein was praised for its elegant design and excellent performance characteristics. Its influence extends beyond direct adoption, as the Threefish block cipher at its core has been used independently in various security applications and protocols.
