Tip5 is a cryptographic hash function specifically designed and optimized for use within recursive STARK (Scalable Transparent Argument of Knowledge) proof systems. It operates over a prime field rather than binary data, making it algebraically friendly for zero-knowledge proof computations. The function uses a sponge construction with carefully chosen S-boxes and round constants to achieve both security and efficiency in the arithmetic circuits that underlie STARK proofs. Its design prioritizes minimizing the number of field multiplications needed during proof generation and verification.

The primary advantage of Tip5 is its exceptional performance within recursive proof systems, where it can be orders of magnitude faster than traditional hash functions like SHA-256 or even Poseidon when used inside STARK circuits. It was designed with provable security properties against algebraic attacks that are specific to arithmetic hash functions, including Gröbner basis attacks and differential cryptanalysis over finite fields. The hash function achieves a security level suitable for cryptographic applications while maintaining the lowest possible constraint count in STARK arithmetic circuits.

Tip5 was developed by the team behind Triton VM, a virtual machine designed for generating STARK proofs of program execution. It is used as the core hash function in Triton VM and has been adopted by the Neptune project, a cryptocurrency that leverages recursive STARK proofs for scalability and privacy. The algorithm represents a newer generation of arithmetization-oriented hash functions, building upon lessons learned from earlier designs like Rescue, Poseidon, and Tip4, with significant improvements in both speed and security margins.
