X16R is a proof-of-work hashing algorithm that chains together 16 different hash functions — including BLAKE512, BMW, Groestl, JH, Keccak, Skein, Luffa, Cubehash, SHAvite, SIMD, ECHO, Hamsi, Fugue, Shabal, Whirlpool, and SHA-512. What makes X16R unique is that the order in which these 16 algorithms are executed is not fixed but is determined by the last 8 bytes of the previous block hash. Each nibble (4 bits) of those bytes selects one of the 16 algorithms, creating a constantly changing sequence of hash operations from block to block.

The primary design goal of X16R is ASIC resistance through algorithmic randomization. Because the order of hash functions changes with every block, it is extremely difficult and expensive to design specialized ASIC hardware that can efficiently handle all possible permutations. This levels the playing field between GPU miners and potential ASIC manufacturers, promoting a more decentralized mining ecosystem. The algorithm maintains strong cryptographic security by leveraging well-established hash functions, each of which has been extensively analyzed by the cryptographic community.

X16R was introduced in 2018 by the Ravencoin project, a Bitcoin fork focused on asset tokenization and transfer. Ravencoin remains the most prominent cryptocurrency using X16R and helped popularize the concept of randomized multi-algorithm hashing. The algorithm inspired several variants, including X16S (which sorts the algorithms instead of randomizing) and X16Rv2 (an updated version adopted by Ravencoin itself to counteract emerging FPGA and ASIC miners). X16R demonstrated that algorithmic unpredictability could be a viable strategy for maintaining GPU-mineable proof-of-work networks.
