Proof of Spacetime is a consensus mechanism that requires participants to demonstrate they have dedicated a specific amount of storage space for a continuous period of time. Unlike simple Proof of Capacity, which only proves storage at a single point in time, Proof of Spacetime cryptographically verifies that data has been persistently stored over an extended duration. This is achieved through repeated challenges that the storage provider must answer, proving they still hold the committed data at each verification interval.

The key advantage of Proof of Spacetime is that it creates a reliable, decentralized storage network where participants are economically incentivized to maintain data over long periods. This makes it well-suited for building decentralized storage solutions that can compete with centralized cloud providers. The energy consumption is far lower than Proof of Work since it relies on storage rather than computation. However, the trade-offs include the high initial cost of acquiring substantial storage hardware and the complexity of the cryptographic proofs, which can make validation computationally demanding.

The most prominent implementation of Proof of Spacetime is found in the Filecoin network, designed by Protocol Labs. Filecoin uses two variants — Proof of Replication (PoRep), which proves data has been uniquely encoded to a specific sector, and Proof of Spacetime (PoSt), which verifies ongoing storage. Together, these mechanisms underpin a decentralized storage marketplace where users pay to store files and storage providers earn FIL tokens. Filecoin has become one of the largest decentralized storage networks, hosting petabytes of data for clients worldwide.
