BLAKE256 is a cryptographic hash function from the BLAKE family that produces a 256-bit digest. It was one of five finalists in the NIST SHA-3 competition held between 2008 and 2012. The algorithm is built on a modified ChaCha stream cipher core, using the HAIFA iteration mode combined with a local wide-pipe construction. BLAKE256 processes input in 512-bit blocks through 14 rounds of mixing operations that incorporate message words and predefined constants derived from the digits of pi.

BLAKE256 is renowned for its exceptional speed, consistently outperforming SHA-256 in software implementations across a wide range of platforms. Despite its high throughput, it maintains a strong security margin with no known practical attacks against its full-round version. The algorithm offers good resistance against length-extension attacks and provides a high degree of parallelism, making it efficient on modern multi-core processors. While it does not specifically target ASIC resistance, its design based on ARX (Addition-Rotation-XOR) operations makes it relatively straightforward to implement in both hardware and software.

BLAKE256 is most notably used by Decred (DCR), which employs it as the core hashing algorithm in its hybrid Proof-of-Work and Proof-of-Stake consensus system. The algorithm was also adopted by several other cryptocurrency projects during the early-to-mid 2010s. BLAKE256 served as the foundation for the later BLAKE2 and BLAKE3 hash functions, which are now widely used in non-cryptocurrency applications such as file integrity verification and password hashing. Its legacy as a SHA-3 finalist cemented its reputation as one of the most thoroughly analyzed and trusted hash function designs in modern cryptography.
