Decred (DCR)

Decred (DCR) is a standalone, open-source Layer 1 blockchain launched in February 2016 that positions itself as an autonomously governed, self-funding evolution of digital money. Rather than relying on a single core team or a purely proof-of-work miner base, Decred combines a hybrid Proof-of-Work and Proof-of-Stake consensus system: miners produce blocks, while coinholders who lock up DCR to purchase voting tickets must approve those blocks and vote on protocol upgrades before they take effect. This dual-layer design is intended to make the chain more resistant to the kind of unilateral control or 51 percent attacks that can affect single-consensus networks.

Governance is formalized through Politeia, Decred’s on-chain proposal and voting system, which lets stakeholders submit and fund development ideas directly. Ten percent of every block reward is automatically routed to a decentralized treasury that pays for ongoing development, marketing, and ecosystem work without depending on outside investors, while the remainder of the reward is split between miners and voting stakers. The project has a fixed maximum supply of 21 million DCR, distributed through a continuous, decreasing issuance schedule since launch. Beyond the base chain, the ecosystem includes DCRDEX, a non-custodial decentralized exchange for atomic-swap trading, and optional CoinShuffle++ based privacy mixing. Within this system, DCR is the network’s native asset: it is used to pay transaction fees, is issued as the block reward, and must be staked to obtain voting tickets that grant a say in both block validation and treasury-funded governance decisions.
