What is Circle Invest?
Circle Invest was a mobile cryptocurrency investment app launched in early 2018 by Circle Internet Group, founded in 2013 by Jeremy Allaire and Sean Neville. The app was available for iOS and Android and limited to US residents, operating in 46 states at its peak. New York, Minnesota, Hawaii, and Wyoming were excluded due to local regulatory constraints.
The app let users buy and sell up to 15 cryptocurrencies, including:
- Bitcoin
- Ethereum
- Bitcoin Cash
- Litecoin
- Ethereum Classic
- Zcash
- Monero
- Basic Attention Token
Trading was commission-free, with a minimum investment of $1. A standout feature called “Buy the Market” allowed users to spread a single purchase across a basket of coins weighted by market cap, making it accessible for first-time investors. User funds were held in cold storage, and Circle aimed to back deposits with insurance through Lloyd’s of London underwriters.
Circle Invest was discontinued as part of a broader restructuring of Circle’s business in 2019. Circle sold the app’s customer accounts to Voyager Digital, with roughly 40,000 retail accounts migrating to the Voyager platform by early 2020. Around the same time, Circle wound down Circle Pay and Circle Trade, exiting all consumer and trading products to concentrate on institutional infrastructure. Circle today focuses on:
- USDC and EURC stablecoins
- Circle Wallets
- Cross-Chain Transfer Protocol
- Circle Payments Network for businesses and financial institutions
