Portis was a non-custodial blockchain wallet developed in Israel, designed to reduce friction for users interacting with decentralized applications (dApps). Rather than requiring seed phrases or browser extensions, Portis allowed users to log in with a familiar email and password. Private keys were encrypted and stored locally on the user’s device, ensuring that Portis itself never held custody of user funds. The wallet gained traction as an SDK that dApp developers could integrate directly, lowering the barrier to entry for non-technical users entering the blockchain ecosystem.

A standout feature was its credit and debit card gateway, which allowed users to purchase cryptocurrencies without lengthy KYC processes or pre-existing crypto holdings. Transactions could be completed within minutes, making Portis one of the more accessible on-ramp solutions of its era. For developers, Portis offered a gas relay feature that let applications sponsor transaction fees on behalf of users, removing a common friction point in dApp onboarding. The wallet also supported a broad range of networks including Ethereum, Bitcoin, EOS, POA, xDAI, Fuse, and others, accessible from a single unified account.

Portis was acquired by ShapeShift in 2021. Following the acquisition, the product was eventually wound down and the service discontinued. As of late 2025, the portis.io domain redirects to Kraken, the cryptocurrency exchange. Users who relied on Portis for dApp access had to migrate to alternative wallets. The project remains of historical interest as an early attempt to mainstream non-custodial wallet access through familiar web-based authentication.
