What is Stakenet?
Stakenet was a light, self-custody wallet and Layer-2 decentralized exchange platform built on the XSN (Stakenet) blockchain. Developed by X9Developers, the project positioned itself as a trustless, non-custodial trading environment for users who wanted to swap cryptocurrencies without giving up control of their private keys. The wallet handled funds entirely on the user’s device through custom Lightning Network daemon nodes, with no central server holding assets at any point.
The core technology relied on payment channels and atomic swaps executed across Lightning Network nodes. Each supported asset ran its own lightweight LND instance, allowing the wallet to route trades peer-to-peer without requiring full blockchain synchronization. The Lightwallet Swap Service Daemon (LSSD) coordinated order placement and swap execution, connecting the wallet interface to the Stakenet DEX orderbook.
Supported assets included Bitcoin (BTC), Litecoin (LTC), and XSN, the platform’s native coin. Trading pairs on the orderbook were XSN/BTC and XSN/LTC. The X9Developers organization also maintained repositories for a Ledger hardware wallet integration (ledger-app-btc) and an EXCALIBUR project forked from Trezor Core, suggesting planned hardware wallet support. A web-based DEX interface was hosted at stakenet.app and used the Uniswap token list to facilitate additional asset discovery, though it remained in beta.
The XSN blockchain itself used Trustless Proof of Stake (TPoS), a consensus mechanism that allowed coin holders to stake from cold storage, delegating the hot staking work to a masternode operator while keeping funds offline. The network ran masternodes that doubled as Connext router infrastructure for the Layer-2 DEX. XSN was described as the project’s internal settlement currency and the fee-bearing asset on the exchange.
Stakenet’s website went offline in February 2025, and the domain subsequently redirected to an unrelated third-party site. GitHub activity across the X9Developers repositories tapered off by 2023, with no public announcement of a shutdown. The project is no longer operational.
