About TeslaCoin

TeslaCoin (TES) is a cryptocurrency launched on 17 January 2014 as a tribute to Serbian-American inventor Nikola Tesla, whose contributions to electricity and alternating current laid the foundation for modern energy systems. The project was created by the TeslaCoin Foundation with an idealistic aim: to provide a decentralized platform for crowdfunding free-energy research and development projects, using the ticker TES and the P2P port 1856, the year of Tesla’s birth. TeslaCoin has no affiliation with Tesla Inc., the electric vehicle company, or any of its products or executives.

The coin launched with a hybrid consensus model combining Proof of Work (PoW) for initial distribution and Proof of Stake (PoS) for long-term security and staking rewards. PoW mining has since ended, with PoS now the sole block validation mechanism. The maximum supply is capped at 100 million TES, with roughly 79 million coins currently in circulation. Staking rewards were structured on a declining schedule, starting at 12% annually and stepping down over successive years, with a small portion reserved for the Foundation to fund its TeslaStarter crowdfunding initiative.

As of 2026, TeslaCoin is effectively dormant. The project website no longer resolves to official content, community activity on Reddit and Telegram is minimal, and the GitHub repository has not seen active development in years. Trading volume is negligible, and market capitalization remains below $20,000. TeslaCoin stands as a historical relic of the 2014 altcoin era, when hundreds of theme-based cryptocurrencies were launched on lightweight codebases. Investors should treat TES as a high-risk, low-liquidity asset with no active development team or roadmap.
