What is MSigna?

mSIGNA was an open-source desktop Bitcoin wallet developed by Ciphrex Corp, with copyright attributed to both the company and Eric Lombrozo dating from 2011. The project described itself as an interactive desktop application for transacting on the Bitcoin network, with a particular focus on multi-signature security policies and enterprise-grade key management. It was built in C++ using the Qt5 framework, targeting users who needed rigorous control over signing arrangements rather than a simple single-key setup.

The wallet’s defining feature was its support for m-of-n multi-signature policies, meaning a transaction could require approvals from any specified number of co-signers out of a larger group. Alongside this, mSIGNA offered multi-user and multi-device account management, allowing coordinated custody across several participants or devices. SegWit (Segregated Witness) support was added in v0.10.0, and a keychain backup wizard was introduced in later releases. The application also supported QR code generation for address sharing.

mSIGNA was a Bitcoin-focused wallet. Bitcoin mainnet was the default and primary supported blockchain. The codebase also included build scripts and graphics assets for Litecoin, making it the only other explicitly documented chain. The wallet did not support EVM chains, tokens, NFTs, staking, or fiat on-ramps. It was strictly a self-custody tool for signing and broadcasting raw transactions, with no custodial component.

The wallet ran on Linux (64-bit), Windows (64-bit, compiled via mingw64 cross-build), and macOS (10.7 and later). No iOS or Android version was released. All private keys remained under the user’s control at all times, consistent with a fully self-custodial model.

Active development at Ciphrex Corp appears to have wound down around 2017, with the copyright window listed as 2011-2016 in core files. Bug-fix releases continued sporadically through 2022 and into 2023 (the final release, v0.10.6, was published in August 2023), but no new features were introduced in that later period. The ciphrex.com website is no longer reachable, and the project is considered inactive.
