What is Ledger Nano S?
End of life: This product is no longer in active production. The manufacturer remains active with newer models.
The Ledger Nano S is a compact USB hardware wallet developed by Ledger SAS, originally released in 2016 and discontinued in mid-2022. About the size of a USB stick, the device features a small OLED display and two physical buttons for navigating menus and confirming transactions, with private keys stored on a certified secure-element chip that never exposes the seed phrase to the host computer. The wallet connects to a desktop computer through a micro-USB cable and is protected by a PIN code that wipes the device after three incorrect attempts. Over its lifetime more than four million units were sold worldwide, making it one of the most widely owned hardware wallets ever produced.
The Nano S was succeeded by the Ledger Nano S Plus in April 2022, which retains the same form factor but adds significantly more application memory, a larger display, and USB-C connectivity. Ledger has officially stopped selling the original Nano S and recommends owners migrate to the Nano S Plus or the wireless Nano X for continued firmware updates and the latest coin app support. Existing Nano S devices continue to function with Ledger Live, but the limited internal storage means owners can typically only install three to five coin apps at a time, and Ledger no longer publishes new firmware for the device.
Supported networks:
- Bitcoin
- Ethereum and ERC-20 tokens
- Solana
- Cardano
- Polkadot
- XRP
- BNB Chain
- Avalanche
- Tron
- Cosmos
Through the Ledger Live companion application, the Nano S is compatible with more than 15,000 cryptocurrencies and tokens across these and many other networks. Users can check balances, send and receive transactions, and stake supported assets such as ETH, DOT, and ATOM directly from the app while the device handles transaction signing offline. Third-party wallets including MetaMask, Electrum, and MyEtherWallet can also connect to the Nano S for users who prefer alternative interfaces, and the recovery seed phrase generated during setup is fully compatible with other BIP39 wallets if funds ever need to be migrated.
