What is StrongCoin?
StrongCoin is a hybrid Bitcoin wallet launched in 2011 and aimed at users who want online convenience without giving up control of their private keys. The wallet encrypts keys directly in the browser before sending any data to the server, meaning the company never holds unencrypted keys and cannot move user funds. At its peak the platform reported over 134,000 registered accounts.
The web-based service works across desktop, tablet, and mobile browsers without requiring a software installation. Core features include:
- Sending and receiving Bitcoin
- Downloadable PDF account backups encrypted with AES
- Offsite secure backups
- Integrated Bitcoin purchasing through third-party providers
The model positions itself between a fully custodial hosted wallet and a self-hosted software wallet.
Supported networks: Bitcoin only.
In April 2026 the team published a closure announcement, informing users that the service is winding down. Users with remaining balances were asked to withdraw their funds and contact support for account or password-recovery assistance. Starting one year from the announcement date, the company stated it would begin charging a 2% fee on any unclaimed balances still held on the platform.
