What is Torus?

Torus is an open-source, non-custodial key management network developed by Torus Labs, a Singapore-based company founded in 2019. In January 2022, the company rebranded its developer-facing infrastructure under the name Web3Auth following a $13 million Series A round led by Sequoia Capital India. The consumer wallet at app.tor.us now redirects to wallet.web3auth.io, while the underlying Torus network continues to power the key management layer.

The core technology relies on Multi-Party Computation (MPC) and threshold cryptography. A user’s private key is never assembled in one place: it is split into shares held across the Torus node network, the user’s device, and a chosen authentication factor. Any two of these shares are sufficient to reconstruct the key at login, which eliminates the need for a seed phrase entirely. This architecture is non-custodial, meaning neither Torus Labs nor any single node in the network can access a user’s funds independently.

Authentication is handled through familiar social login providers, including Google, X (formerly Twitter), Discord, and email, as well as device-based passkeys and multi-factor authentication. The same infrastructure powers embedded wallet SDKs used by more than 8,200 decentralized applications across DeFi, gaming, and social platforms.

The wallet and Web3Auth SDKs support a broad range of networks, including Ethereum and EVM-compatible chains, Solana, Bitcoin, TON, NEAR, Starknet, SUI, Aptos, Cardano, THORChain, and dYdX, along with ERC-20 and equivalent tokens on supported chains.

In June 2025, Consensys acquired Web3Auth to integrate its MPC and social login technology into MetaMask, targeting improved wallet recovery and broader multi-chain support.
