Polybius (PLBT)

Polybius (PLBT) is an ERC-20 token issued on the Ethereum blockchain in 2017 as part of an initial coin offering for a proposed European digital bank. The project was based in Estonia and aimed to establish a regulated financial institution combining traditional banking services with blockchain technology. Token holders were intended to receive annual dividend payments derived from the bank’s net profits. The ICO launched in March 2017 and raised approximately $31 million from public investors.

The Polybius Bank concept centered on obtaining a FinTech banking license within the European Union, with Estonia’s e-Residency program and its digital-friendly regulatory environment making it an attractive base. The project proposed offering standard banking services, including deposits, loans, and payment processing, alongside crypto-related services such as cryptocurrency-to-fiat conversion and blockchain-based transaction records. Smart contracts were intended to govern dividend distribution to PLBT holders based on annual profit allocations. The token was categorized under Finance & Banking and Ethereum ERC-20.

The Polybius project did not successfully establish a licensed banking operation. After years of limited public updates, the project’s website (polybius.io) went offline in September 2024, marking the end of active operations. PLBT has a maximum supply of 20,000,000 tokens, with approximately 3,969,560 in circulation according to available on-chain data. The token contract remains on the Ethereum mainnet at 0x0affa06e7fbe5bc9a764c979aa66e8256a631f02 and is verifiable via Etherscan.
