About Wrapped Solana
Wrapped Solana (wSOL) is an SPL token that provides a 1:1 representation of native SOL within the Solana ecosystem. Native SOL functions at the protocol level, covering transaction fees and account rent, but predates the SPL token standard that governs how all other assets on Solana operate. As a result, raw SOL cannot interact directly with the smart contract interfaces used by decentralized exchanges, lending protocols, and other DeFi applications. Wrapping SOL converts it into a token that conforms to the SPL standard, making it interoperable with the same interfaces used by USDC, USDT, and every other Solana-based token. The wrapping process happens entirely within the Solana Token Program and does not involve a bridge to another blockchain.
The canonical mint address for wSOL is So11111111111111111111111111111111111111112, a hardcoded address within the Solana Token Program also referred to as the Native Mint. To wrap SOL, a user creates an Associated Token Account (ATA) linked to this mint, deposits SOL into it, and calls the syncNative instruction on the Token Program to reconcile the balance. Unwrapping works by closing the token account, which returns all lamports to the wallet as native SOL. Modern wallets such as Phantom and aggregators such as Jupiter handle this wrapping and unwrapping automatically during swaps. wSOL serves as a quote token in a large number of liquidity pools on Raydium, Orca, and Meteora, and is required in many program interactions that expect SPL-compliant token interfaces.
wSOL has no independent supply cap. The amount of wSOL in circulation at any moment equals the total SOL held across all wSOL token accounts, meaning its supply fluctuates with wrapping and unwrapping activity. There is no separate team, whitepaper, or roadmap for wSOL as a project. It is a built-in component of the Solana Program Library, available on Solana mainnet since the network launched in March 2020. Developers reference the NATIVE_MINT constant from the @solana/spl-token SDK when building applications that interact with wSOL. The Solana Foundation maintains documentation covering the wrapping mechanics and common developer use cases.
