What is Armory?
Armory is an open-source, self-custody Bitcoin wallet built around cold storage and multi-signature security. Originally developed by Armory Technologies Inc., the project was handed to a volunteer community (led by contributors goatpig, droark, and achow101) after the company wound down operations. The last stable release, version 0.96.5, was published in December 2018, and development has been dormant since then. Users considering Armory should factor this into their security evaluation.
Custody: self-custody (non-custodial). Private keys are generated and stored on an offline machine and never touch an internet-connected system.
The wallet is designed for desktop environments and runs on Windows, Linux, and macOS. Its defining feature is air-gapped transaction signing. Armory also supports:
- Deterministic key generation
- Watching-only wallets (to monitor balances without exposing keys online)
- Paper backups
- Multi-signature configurations for shared or high-security storage
A vulnerability in the fragmented backup feature was patched in version 0.96.3; anyone using fragmented backups on an older version should migrate funds immediately.
Armory supports Bitcoin only. It requires a full Bitcoin Core node and is aimed at technically experienced users comfortable managing their own node and key infrastructure. Segregated Witness (SegWit) support was added in version 0.96.x. There is no mobile app, no browser extension, and no hosted or custodial component.
