What is Bitpanda Custody?
Bitpanda Custody is the institutional digital asset custody arm of Bitpanda Group, the Vienna-based crypto and investment platform founded in 2014. The product is aimed exclusively at professional and institutional clients, including banks, asset managers, and fintech platforms, and is not available to retail users.
The custody solution uses a segregated model, meaning client assets are held separately from company assets and are never rehypothecated. Primary holdings are maintained in offline cold storage secured by hardware security modules (HSM), with a limited hot wallet layer for operational transaction processing. Multi-party computation (MPC) adds an additional cryptographic control layer, ensuring no single party holds a complete private key. The platform is ISO 27001-certified and holds SOC 2, FIPS 140-2, and PCI DSS certifications, with continuous independent penetration testing and real-time threat monitoring.
Bitpanda Custody holds multiple regulatory authorisations across Europe. In January 2025, Bitpanda became one of the first crypto firms to secure a MiCA licence from Germany’s BaFin, followed by further MiCA authorisations in Malta and from Austria’s Financial Market Authority (FMA) in April 2025. The platform is also FCA-registered in the United Kingdom and holds VASP, MiFID II, and PSD2 licences, giving it one of the broadest regulatory footprints of any European crypto custody provider. MiCA passporting covers all 30 EEA countries, including Liechtenstein.
The service supports Bitcoin, Ethereum, and a broad range of major digital assets, with the underlying Bitpanda Enterprise infrastructure covering over 10,000 tradable assets. Institutional staking is available on more than 30 proof-of-stake networks, powered by Kiln’s validator infrastructure. The platform is also designed for DeFi-compatible workflows, allowing assets to be deployed across decentralised finance environments while remaining under institutional custody controls.
Bitpanda Custody has attracted significant institutional interest. In 2025, Deutsche Bank announced plans to build a crypto custody service in partnership with Bitpanda Technology Solutions, targeting institutional clients seeking regulated access to Bitcoin and tokenised financial instruments. Other enterprise partners using Bitpanda’s infrastructure include Raiffeisen Bank, LBBW, N26, and Lydia. Bitpanda Custody forms part of the broader Bitpanda Enterprise suite, which also covers liquidity, stablecoin, payment, and tokenisation products for financial infrastructure providers.
