What is Cash App?

Cash App is a financial services platform developed by Block, Inc. (formerly Square), available on iOS and Android. Launched in 2013, it serves tens of millions of users primarily in the United States and the United Kingdom. The platform combines peer-to-peer payments, a prepaid debit card (the Cash Card, issued by Sutton Bank), direct deposit, savings, commission-free stock investing through its FINRA/SIPC-registered subsidiary Cash App Investing LLC, and Bitcoin services, all in one app.

Cash App added Bitcoin support in 2018, making it one of the first mainstream consumer finance apps to do so. Users can buy and sell Bitcoin starting from $1, send and receive Bitcoin via on-chain addresses, and withdraw holdings to a self-custody wallet at any time. The platform holds Bitcoin 1:1 in full reserve, with the vast majority kept in cold storage. In 2022, Cash App integrated the Lightning Network, enabling near-instant, low-fee Bitcoin payments. It supports only Bitcoin among cryptocurrencies; no other coins or tokens are offered.

In September 2022, a former employee downloaded Cash App Investing reports containing personal data for approximately 8.2 million current and former US customers. The exposed information included brokerage account numbers and portfolio values, but not passwords or Social Security numbers. Block disclosed the incident in April 2023 and notified affected customers. The company underwent workforce reductions in 2024 and 2025.

Cash App operates as a non-bank platform. Balances are eligible for FDIC pass-through insurance through partner banks, while Bitcoin and investment holdings are not FDIC-insured. Bitcoin services are not available in all US states due to varying licensing requirements.
