What is Edge?
Edge is a self-custody mobile cryptocurrency wallet for iOS and Android, founded in 2014 as Airbitz before rebranding to Edge in 2017. It uses a zero-knowledge, client-side encryption architecture: all data is encrypted on the user’s device before touching Edge servers, meaning Edge has no access to private keys or transaction data. Users recover their wallets with a username and password rather than a raw seed phrase, which lowers the barrier for newcomers without removing self-custody.
Supported assets:
- Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, Monero, XRP, Dogecoin
- Dash, Stellar, Solana, Polkadot, Avalanche, Polygon
- Optimism, Binance Chain, Algorand, Sui, and many others
- Over 130 assets across multiple chains; ERC-20 and other token standards supported within their respective chains
The app includes built-in crypto-to-crypto exchange and fiat on-ramp integrations with partners such as Simplex, MoonPay, Banxa, Paybis, and Revolut, allowing purchases and sales without leaving the app. A standout security feature is Duress Mode, which activates a decoy account under coercion. Multi-device synchronization is handled through encrypted peer-to-peer cloud backup, and authentication options include PIN and biometrics. Edge is based in the United States and has remained independently operated since its founding.
