What is Matic Wallet?
Matic Wallet was the official web-based wallet and bridge interface developed by Matic Network, the Ethereum Layer 2 scaling project founded in 2017 by Jaynti Kanani, Sandeep Nailwal, Anurag Arjun, and Mihailo Bjelic. It launched alongside the Matic Network mainnet in May 2020, serving as the primary interface for users to manage assets on the Matic PoS sidechain and interact with the Ethereum-to-Matic bridge.
The wallet operated as a self-custody, browser-based application requiring no software installation. Users connected via compatible Ethereum web3 wallets (such as MetaMask) to authenticate and sign transactions. It did not hold private keys itself; control over funds remained with the user’s connected signing wallet.
Matic Wallet supported Ethereum (ETH) and ERC-20 tokens mapped to the Matic PoS chain, as well as the native MATIC token. Its core functions were bridging assets from the Ethereum mainnet to the Matic sidechain (and back), delegating MATIC to validators for PoS staking rewards, and viewing on-chain balances. It was not a general-purpose multi-chain wallet and did not support unrelated blockchains such as Bitcoin or Solana.
Matic Network rebranded as Polygon in February 2021, and the wallet was subsequently relaunched as the Polygon Wallet Suite, retaining the same bridge and staking functionality under the new name. The matic.network domain remained operational for some time as a redirect but went fully offline by October 2024, at which point the legacy Matic Wallet URL ceased to function.
