What is Robinhood?

Robinhood operates two distinct crypto products. Robinhood Crypto is the custodial trading service built into the main brokerage app, where Robinhood holds the private keys on behalf of users. It supports over 65 cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, Dogecoin, XRP, Cardano, Avalanche, Chainlink, and Shiba Inu, with zero commission on trades and a spread-based fee structure. Users can stake Ethereum and Solana for rewards, transfer crypto without additional Robinhood fees (network costs may apply), and participate in a Learn and Earn program that pays small crypto amounts for completing educational modules.

Robinhood Wallet is a separate self-custody app available on iOS and Android, launched out of beta in 2023. Users hold their own private keys and interact directly with eight supported networks:

  • Bitcoin
  • Ethereum
  • Solana
  • Dogecoin
  • Arbitrum
  • Polygon
  • Optimism
  • Base

The wallet supports thousands of tokens across these networks, enables token swaps, and allows connections to decentralized applications. Backup can be stored on iCloud, Google Drive, or managed manually. Assets held in the brokerage account are custodial; assets in Robinhood Wallet are fully user-controlled.

Founded: 2013. Robinhood Markets, Inc. is headquartered in Menlo Park, California. In 2024 the company obtained MiFID and MiCA licenses through its Lithuanian subsidiary, Robinhood Europe UAB, enabling crypto and brokerage services across the EU. In 2025 Robinhood completed the acquisition of Bitstamp, a regulated European crypto exchange, for approximately $200 million. That same year, FINRA imposed a $26 million penalty on Robinhood Financial and Securities for anti-money laundering program deficiencies.
