Axie Infinity (AXS)

Axie Infinity (AXS) is the governance token of Axie Infinity, a blockchain-based game developed by the Vietnamese studio Sky Mavis. Launched in 2018, the game lets players collect, breed, battle, and trade digital creatures called Axies, each represented as an NFT. It draws inspiration from titles like Pokemon and CryptoKitties, combining monster-collecting gameplay with an on-chain economy, and became widely known during 2020 to 2021 for its play-to-earn model, which gave many players in countries such as the Philippines a source of income.

The Axie ecosystem runs on Ronin, an Ethereum-linked sidechain built by Sky Mavis to provide faster transactions and lower fees than Ethereum mainnet, and players access the game and their NFTs through the Ronin wallet. Alongside AXS, the game uses a separate utility token, Smooth Love Potion (SLP), which is consumed in breeding new Axies, while virtual land plots in the game’s Lunacia metaverse add a further layer to the in-game economy.

AXS itself functions as the network’s governance and staking token: holders can stake AXS to earn rewards and to vote on proposals affecting the game’s development and treasury, giving the community a role in decisions about Axie Infinity’s future direction. AXS has a capped maximum supply of 270 million tokens.
