What is BRD?
BRD (formerly Bread Wallet) was a non-custodial mobile cryptocurrency wallet founded in 2015 in Zurich, Switzerland. It was among the first mobile wallets to offer a self-custody Bitcoin experience without requiring users to create an account or trust a third party with their private keys. At its peak, BRD had over 10 million registered users across more than 170 countries, making it one of the most widely used mobile wallets of its era.
The wallet was available for iOS and Android and supported Bitcoin, Ethereum, and a range of ERC-20 tokens, later expanding to include additional assets. BRD used a simplified payment verification (SPV) model, connecting directly to the blockchain without routing traffic through centralized servers. It also offered an in-app token rewards program called BRD Rewards, which distributed the native BRD token to active users.
In November 2022, Coinbase acquired BRD. Following the acquisition, the BRD app was discontinued and users were guided to migrate their funds to Coinbase Wallet. The BRD app remained available in app stores temporarily to facilitate the migration, after which development ceased. The underlying open-source code remained accessible on GitHub for community reference.
BRD played a meaningful role in lowering the barrier to self-custody crypto storage during the early years of mainstream mobile adoption. Its legacy is reflected in the design principles it helped establish for user-owned, non-custodial mobile wallets.
