What is Equicex?
Equicex was a cryptocurrency prepaid card service operated by Equicex Group Ltd, a private limited company incorporated in London, United Kingdom, in January 2019. The service allowed users to load supported cryptocurrencies onto a Visa-branded card and spend them at any merchant or ATM that accepted Visa, with conversion to fiat currency handled at the point of transaction.
Equicex offered two card tiers: a standard physical Visa Electron card and a virtual card, both denominated in EUR, GBP, or USD. The company also marketed a “Black Card” variant advertised as requiring no identity verification, issued through a partner bank in Belize. Card applications were completed through the Equicex website, and users deposited cryptocurrency into a platform-controlled address, meaning the service operated on a fully custodial basis with no user access to private keys.
The platform claimed to support over 300 cryptocurrencies for card loading, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, Ripple, Dash, Groestlcoin, Ethereum Classic, Tron, Tether, Stellar, Monero, and Cardano. Supported fiat output currencies were EUR, GBP, USD, CAD, and CHF.
Equicex Group Ltd was formally dissolved by Companies House on 19 January 2021, approximately two years after incorporation. Despite the legal dissolution, the equicex.com domain remained intermittently accessible for several years. The service drew widespread allegations of fraud from users who reported ordering cards that were never delivered and receiving no response from support. The website went fully offline in October 2024. As of that date, the service is no longer operational, and user funds deposited on the platform are not recoverable through any disclosed mechanism.
