What is Fortmatic?

Fortmatic was a developer-focused wallet SDK launched in 2018 that let users access Ethereum-based decentralized applications without browser extensions or seed phrases. In 2020, the company rebranded to Magic (magic.link), broadening the product beyond Ethereum to a full authentication and embedded wallet platform used across multiple blockchains.

Under the Magic brand, the core offering shifted from a standalone wallet product to a developer SDK for embedding wallet creation and user authentication directly inside applications. Developers can authenticate users via email one-time passwords, SMS, social logins, passkeys, and SSO, with no seed phrase exposure to the end user. The underlying key management relies on a delegated non-custodial model using hardware security modules, meaning neither Magic nor the developer holds private keys outright.

Magic’s platform supports Ethereum and a wide range of EVM-compatible chains, as well as Solana, Bitcoin, and over 30 blockchain networks in total. It offers SDKs for web, iOS, Android, React Native, Python, and Node.js. As of 2025, the platform reports more than 53 million wallets provisioned and over 18,000 applications built on the infrastructure, with backing from investors including PayPal Ventures, Polygon, and Lightspeed.

The wallet originally distinguished itself by letting developers integrate in minutes without restructuring applications already using Web3 or standard provider interfaces. That integration simplicity remained central to the Magic product after the rebrand. Fortmatic is no longer offered as a separate product; all functionality has been folded into the Magic Wallet API and its associated SDKs.
