What is ICONex?

ICONex is a cryptocurrency wallet developed by the ICON Foundation, built primarily to support the ICON network and its native ICX token. Launched alongside the ICON mainnet in 2017, it was designed to give users a straightforward way to store and manage ICX, interact with ICON-based decentralized applications, and participate in network governance through staking and voting on P-Reps (Public Representatives).

Custody: non-custodial: users hold their own private keys. The wallet also incorporated ICON’s on-chain governance tools, allowing holders to delegate ICX to elected delegates and earn staking rewards directly from the interface.

The wallet was available as a Chrome browser extension and as mobile apps for iOS and Android, making it accessible across desktop and mobile environments. It supported ICX as its core asset, along with IRC-2 tokens built on the ICON network. A notable technical feature was its integration of the Blockchain Transmission Protocol (BTP), ICON’s cross-chain interoperability layer designed to enable communication between separate blockchains without relying on centralized intermediaries.

The ICON Foundation has since positioned Hana Wallet as the current official wallet of the ICON ecosystem, offering broader multi-chain support alongside ICON network features. ICONex remains associated with ICON Foundation and the icon.foundation domain, though users building on the ICON network or engaging with its DeFi applications are now directed toward Hana as the primary wallet option. The ICON network itself is undergoing a significant transition with the migration of ICX to SODA tokens under the SODAX protocol, announced in 2025.
