BitTorrent Chain (BTTC)

BitTorrent Chain (BTTC) is an EVM-compatible, proof-of-stake layer-2 blockchain built on Tron, launched in December 2021 as a joint effort between Tron and the BitTorrent network. It is designed as a cross-chain interoperability protocol, letting assets move between otherwise separate networks such as Tron, Ethereum, and BNB Smart Chain through the BTTC Bridge and a token-mapping mechanism that supports a wide range of widely used tokens.

The chain addresses blockchain scalability limitations by using a three-tier architecture (a Root Contracts Layer, a Delivery Layer, and the BTTC Layer) to achieve high transaction throughput, short block times, and low gas costs compared to many base layer-1 networks. Independent validators secure the network under proof-of-stake, staking the native token to produce blocks, validate transactions, and submit checkpoints.

The BTT/BTTC token underpins the ecosystem in several ways: it pays for gas on the chain, rewards validators, and functions as the governance token for the BTTC DAO. It also carries over BitTorrent’s original file-sharing and storage incentive model, compensating bandwidth providers in the peer-to-peer network and hosts on the BitTorrent File System (BTFS) who offer decentralized storage to renters.
