Cosmos (ATOM)

Cosmos (ATOM) is the native token of the Cosmos Network, a blockchain ecosystem built around the idea of an “Internet of Blockchains” rather than a single monolithic chain. Instead of hosting applications directly, Cosmos provides an architecture in which independent, purpose-built blockchains, known as zones, connect through the Cosmos Hub and exchange assets and data with one another. This design lets developers launch application-specific chains that retain their own sovereignty and governance while still interoperating with the rest of the ecosystem.

The network’s core technology stack includes the Cosmos SDK, an open-source framework used to build custom blockchains without writing consensus and networking code from scratch, and CometBFT (the successor to the original Tendermint consensus engine), a Byzantine fault-tolerant proof-of-stake engine that gives connected chains fast finality. Cross-chain communication is handled by the Inter-Blockchain Communication protocol (IBC), which allows independently operated chains to transfer tokens and messages securely. More than 150 blockchains have been built using this technology.

ATOM is the native asset of the Cosmos Hub, the original and most central chain in the ecosystem. It is used to pay transaction fees, is staked with validators to help secure the Hub through proof-of-stake consensus, and gives holders voting power in on-chain governance proposals that shape the network’s future direction. ATOM’s supply is inflationary rather than fixed, with an issuance rate that adjusts based on the proportion of tokens staked, a mechanism intended to encourage broad participation in network security.
