Ethena (ENA)

Ethena (ENA) is the governance token of Ethena, a decentralized finance protocol built on Ethereum that issues USDe, a synthetic dollar designed to offer a censorship-resistant, crypto-native alternative to traditional fiat-backed stablecoins. Rather than holding cash and Treasuries in a bank, USDe maintains its peg through a delta-neutral strategy: the protocol pairs spot crypto collateral, primarily staked ETH, ETH, and BTC, with an equal and opposite short position in perpetual futures on major derivatives exchanges, so that losses on the collateral are offset by gains on the short side.

This structure is intended to solve the capital-efficiency problem of overcollateralized stablecoins such as Dai, which require collateral ratios well above 100 percent, by backing USDe roughly 1:1 while still hedging against price swings in the underlying assets. Revenue for the system comes from three sources: staking rewards on the ETH-based collateral, funding payments collected on the short futures positions, and the basis on short-dated futures contracts. Users who stake USDe receive sUSDe, a yield-bearing token that accrues this revenue over time, a model Ethena markets as an “Internet Bond.”

ENA itself does not represent or wrap another asset; it functions as the protocol’s governance instrument, with holders able to vote on risk parameters, the composition of USDe’s backing, and partnerships. Locking ENA produces sENA, a liquid receipt token used to align long-term holders with the protocol and to participate in various incentive programs across the Ethena ecosystem, which has expanded its integrations into platforms such as Aave, Morpho, Pendle, and Hyperliquid.
