Morpho (MORPHO)

Morpho (MORPHO) is the native governance token of Morpho, an open source, non-custodial lending protocol built on Ethereum and other EVM-compatible networks, including Base. Founded in 2021, Morpho set out to improve on existing pool-based lending markets such as Aave and Compound by matching lenders and borrowers directly on a peer-to-peer basis whenever possible, narrowing the spread between supply and borrow rates. When a direct match is not available, funds fall back to the underlying liquidity pool, so depositors and borrowers always retain continuous access to liquidity.

The protocol is organized around two main products: Morpho Markets, which allow permissionless creation of isolated lending markets for a chosen collateral and loan asset pair, and Morpho Vaults, which are non-custodial vaults that allocate deposited funds across markets to optimize yield for depositors. Its contracts are designed to be immutable and minimally governed, aiming for a trustless base layer while still supporting flexible, developer-defined risk parameters on top. This architecture has attracted integrations beyond typical DeFi users, including crypto exchanges and, in the case of SG-FORGE, a digital asset arm of Societe Generale, traditional financial institutions exploring on-chain lending.

MORPHO functions as the governance token for the protocol, with holders able to vote on proposals affecting the Morpho DAO and its treasury. Supply is capped at 1 billion tokens, allocated across governance, strategic partners, founders, early contributors, and users. The token launched as non-transferable and was made transferable by a governance vote in November 2024, with a wrapped version subsequently introduced to support on-chain vote tracking.
