SafeMoon (SAFEMOON)

SafeMoon was a BEP-20 reflection token launched on Binance Smart Chain on 8 March 2021. Its tokenomics imposed a 10% fee on every transaction: 5% was redistributed to existing holders as passive yield (static reflection), and 5% was split between burning and adding liquidity to PancakeSwap pools. The supply was set at one quadrillion (1,000,000,000,000,000) tokens, with the development team burning its allocation at launch to signal a fair launch. SafeMoon attracted widespread retail attention through 2021, driven by celebrity endorsements and viral social media campaigns, briefly reaching a market capitalisation in the billions of dollars before collapsing sharply later that year.

In November 2023, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) charged SafeMoon LLC and three of its founders: John Karony (CEO), Kyle Nagy, and Thomas Smith (CTO). The charges alleged securities fraud, wire fraud, and money laundering. The SEC alleged that the founders secretly diverted funds from the liquidity pool and misrepresented the token safety to investors. The U.S. Department of Justice issued parallel criminal charges against Karony and Smith. SafeMoon LLC filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy liquidation in December 2023. The company was subsequently wound down through 2024 and into 2025.

As of 2025, the SafeMoon project is no longer operational. The official website is offline, the development team has disbanded, and no active protocol exists. The contract (0x8076c74c5e3f5852037f31ff0093eeb8c8add8d3) remains on Binance Smart Chain as a historical artifact. Approximately 583 trillion SAFEMOON tokens remain in circulation against a maximum supply of one quadrillion, though the token has no active use case or development backing. SafeMoon is now considered a terminated project.
