Solana (SOL)

Solana is an open-source Layer 1 blockchain designed for high throughput and low transaction costs. Founded by Anatoly Yakovenko and launched as a mainnet beta in March 2020, Solana uses a combination of Proof of History (PoH), a cryptographic clock that orders transactions before consensus, and Tower BFT, a Delegated Proof of Stake protocol that finalizes blocks. This architecture allows the network to process tens of thousands of transactions per second with block times of approximately 400 milliseconds and average fees well below one cent.

The SOL token serves two core functions: paying network transaction fees and participating in validation through staking. Validators stake SOL to produce and vote on blocks, while any SOL holder can delegate their tokens to a validator and earn staking rewards. Solana’s ecosystem has grown into one of the largest in crypto, hosting a wide range of DeFi protocols, NFT marketplaces including Magic Eden, and consumer-facing applications. The Solana Foundation funds validator diversity, developer grants, and long-term protocol research.

Solana operates with a declining inflation schedule starting near 8% annually, decreasing by 15% each year toward a long-term target of 1.5%, meaning there is no fixed maximum supply. As of early 2025, the circulating supply is approximately 575 million SOL, backed by roughly 1,700 to 2,000 active validators. Following performance issues in 2021 and 2022, the network underwent significant client improvements. The Firedancer validator client, developed by Jump Crypto, was introduced to improve throughput, resilience, and client diversity. The Solana network is active and in continuous development.
